World Mountain Bike Bog Snorkelling Championships
4th Jul 2009

If you are looking for unique, wacky and physically challenging, this is the event for you!
The idea is to cycle along the bottom of a 6ft deep peat bog wearing a mask and snorkel and get back in the quickest time!
The bike used is specially prepared with a lead filled frame and water filled tyres to ensure grip on the pond bottom. The snorkeller/cyclist wears a lead weight belt to avoid floating off the bike! Scuba Drivers are on hand for safety purposes.

This years Bog Series, in the small town of Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys began on 4th July with the World Mountain Bike Bog Snorkelling Championships.

With the largest number of participants to date including a stag party(!), there was a atmosphere of joviality around the Waen Rhydd Bog on the outskirts of town. And the crowds were not disappointed.
Participant are required to ride a specially prepared bike which is lead and water filled along the bottom of a 6ft deep peat bog trench whilst breathing through a snorkel! The entrant is held down by wearing a diving belt and frog-men are on hand to help when the inevitable rolls over the handlebars or fall into the murky depths occurs!
Regular Bog Series enthusiast, Brian Evans of Bridgend, won the event, breaking the World Record time by completing the circuit in an astonishing 54.91seconds. The fastest lady was Nicola Bend in 2mins 38.84seconds, whilst the fastest local (some people should know better!) was Eugene Duncan of New Hall Guest House, Llanwrtyd Wells in a time of 2:36:37.
The husband to be, who thought cycling through mud the best way to spend his last days as a single man, donned a Borat style Mankini and finished his circuit in 1:58:72 ⢠well done Arthur Cooke, I hope the Bog Mud washes out before the big day!

As if this is not challenge enough, on Sunday 5th July contestants were invited to participate in the Bog Snorkelling Triathlon! An all day event requiring participant to fell run, bog snorkel and mountain cycle all in the name of good, not so clean, fun!

This year these events, which are the prelude to the Internationally renowned World Bog Snorkelling Championships (august Bank Holiday Monday), are supported by Arcend -a brand new fairtrade, organic clothing brand based in Cardiff; and Natural Balance Foods of Aylesbury.
