Green Events was born out of a group of local business people who got together in the late 1970s to try to devise methods of bringing tourism trade to the town, as the pony trekking industry, which had been the mainstay of the local tourist economy, declined.
In 1979 the Tourist Association of Llanwrtyd Wells was created to enhance the local economy, by marketing unique events within the town and surrounding area. The prime objective was to organise a new event each year.
The first ever Man versus Horse Marathon was staged in 1980, followed by the Welsh International Four Days' Walks in 1981, and the Drovers' Walks in 1982. Thirteen unusual events that could not fit into "main stream" are now part of the Llanwrtyd persona, and we are not finished yet.
One of the leading figures was Gordon Green, then the owner of the Neuadd Arms Hotel in the town, and he is still actively involved in the events to this day. As others came and went, Gordon and his friend Ron Skilton carried on creating and organising different events over the years, and his leading role was given recognition by the creation of "Green Events", long before it had the environmental connotation it has today. As the events grew in popularity and scale, the informal grouping of volunteers was formalised with the formation in 2001 of Green Events Limited, a not-for-profit company whose aim is to benefit the local economy by attracting visitors to the town through the organisation of events.
In 2005 Green Events was the winner of the Welsh Tourist Board (now Visit Wales) 'Top Day(s) Out in Wales' award, presented at a glittering ceremony in Cardiff.
The organisation has had to grow to keep up with the increasing popularity of the events, and today there are different groups of local volunteers who manage the various different events throughout the year, to whom we extend our grateful thanks and without whom we would not be able to continue.
In 2009 Gordon stepped down as chairman of the organisation, and Lindsay Ketteringham, the current owner of the Neuadd Arms, has taken over the position.
